Commonwealth Financial Network® Summer Internship Program—
A Continued Success
Waltham, MA (September 17, 2013)—Commonwealth Financial Network® the nation’s largest, privately held independent broker/dealer-RIA, recently wrapped up a successful 2013 summer internship program. The program, launched in 1999, has experienced significant growth and development during the past 14 years.
“A total of 20 students were selected for the program this year,” said Kate Creagh, Commonwealth’s managing principal, human resources. “Though the majority of our internship candidates are employee referrals, this year’s program included a number of applicants from job boards, as well as Summer Search, a program that assists in matching resilient, low-income students with mentor and internship opportunities.” Creagh added, “We are fortunate to be near many wonderful educational institutions to source from. Each student we see brings a fresh perspective, with an unmatched energy to work, learn, and grow at Commonwealth. We welcome that mentality and embrace that readiness to succeed.”
Over the years, about 10 percent of those who have interned at Commonwealth have been hired as permanent employees. Notables from the inaugural class—and who are currently on the firm’s staff—include Gavin Morrissey, senior vice president, wealth management, and Kol Birke, vice president, business systems strategies, and financial behavior specialist. “Thankfully, Commonwealth’s internship program provides the trust and leeway to contribute and grow, where hard work is recognized over rank. Commonwealth creates a truly unparalleled opportunity for students,” said Birke. “I didn’t realize a job could be this fulfilling. I have autonomy to work how I work best, and, best of all, I have a whole new family (of coworkers).”
Tracy Paulo, Commonwealth’s manager, compensation, is another noteworthy alum of the program. “Interning in Commonwealth’s Licensing department opened my eyes to the various capacities to which I could apply my knowledge and skills to the business,” she said. “The ability to return for a second summer internship not only made me feel appreciated, but it also allowed me to build off of what I had previously learned, find my niche, and grow at a more substantial pace.”
In 2009, Commonwealth instituted Everything Speaks, a course intended to assist interns in making the transition from an academic to a professional environment. Although the summer program typically runs from May through August, approximately 30 percent of the 2013 class will stay on part-time during the upcoming fall semester.
Sam Millette, investment research intern, is a rising junior at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, and has opted to extend his internship through this fall. “Commonwealth has provided me with the perfect opportunity to not only expose me to the broker/dealer industry but to also gain hands-on experience in my specific areas of interest,” said Sam. “The Commonwealth community offers a welcoming and engaging environment, and I’m excited to continue to learn investment strategies that directly correspond to my studies in economics.”
