Don’t let your money go out the leaky window, non-weather-stripped door, or drafty floorboards! Consider these energy-efficient tips.
Call the utility company. Chances are, your oil, gas, or electric company will be happy to provide a free or low-cost energy audit of your home to show you where energy is being wasted.
Check your existing insulation. Go here first: www.eere.energy.gov/consumer.
Install energy-saving aids. Programmable thermostats adjust both heating and air conditioning. Ceiling fans cool in the summer and improve heat efficiency in the winter. Wrap a heater blanket around your hot water heater. Replace your weather stripping.
Maintain your heating and air conditioning systems. Get annual inspections for both. Replace furnace filters every month.
Buy energy-efficient appliances. Look for the Energy Star label.
