Fiction: Declaring bankruptcy will discharge me from all of my debts.

Fact: Although most unsecured debt, including mortgages and credit card balances, may be discharged after you file for bankruptcy, there are a few exceptions. Debt that generally is not eliminated includes money owed to the government—such as student loans and certain taxes—and child support and maintenance payments.
