Fiction: The IRS may reach out to you by e-mail to request information.
Fact: The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by e-mail to request personal or financial information. (It also wonít contact you via text message or social media.) If you receive an e-mail purportedly from the IRS, it may be a phishing scam.
