with New Framework Waltham, MA. (June 16, 2009) —Commonwealth Financial Network ® announces the addition of three portfolios with alternative asset classes to its lineup of in-house managed portfolios. The first series of its kind for the independent broker/dealer, the Preferred Portfolio Services ® (PPS) Select Portfolios with Alternatives contain varying percentages of long/short, market neutral, commodity, and managed futures asset classes, with a focus on the following objectives:
“The integration of alternative asset classes reflects the emerging consensus on best practices in the profession, ” said Brad McMillan, Commonwealth’s chief investment officer. The PPS Select Portfolios with Alternatives bring a strategy that has traditionally been reserved for institutional investors to the general investing public. And with a minimum investment of $25,000, it is available to a broad base of investors. “After the market performance of the last eight months, advisors are looking to provide better risk management options to their clients, and investing in portfolios that seek to reduce volatility can help clients stay the course, to their ultimate benefit, ” said McMillan. Commonwealth’s Investment Management team, led by McMillan, found that, during the recent bear market, portfolios with alternative asset classes helped to preserve some capital. While these portfolios have been shown to reduce volatility, they also have had a tendency to lag traditional portfolios in up markets or in markets characterized by lower equity volatility. “A bigger toolbox widens the range of options advisors can offer to clients, and it enables them to provide more specific solutions to specific clients, ” said McMillan. Founded in 1979, Commonwealth Financial Network, member FINRA/SIPC, and a registered investment adviser, is celebrating its 30th anniversary as a leading, privately owned independent broker/dealer, with offices in Waltham, Massachusetts, and San Diego, California. The firm supports more than 1,200 independent registered representatives nationwide and makes available a comprehensive array of financial products and services.
